Span Helps Nonprofits File Form 990

Anonymous 11/09/2017
SPAN offers a variety of tax return e-filing solutions to help users quickly complete their returns and transmit them directly to the IRS. The next major deadline is the Form 990 deadline for nonprofit organizations.

Filing this return by the deadline is very important as it’s necessary to comply with the IRS in order for nonprofits to maintain their tax-exempt status. However, with the help of ExpressTaxExempt and ExpressTaxFilings, tax-exempt groups don’t have to worry. They can complete their Form 990 and transmit them directly to the IRS in no time.

About Form 990

Form 990 is the Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax. Even though nonprofits may be exempt from income taxes, they still have to file this form on an annual basis.

This form is used by government agencies to make sure that nonprofits aren’t abusing their tax exempt status. It’s also used by the IRS to make financial information about nonprofits available to the public, so needless to say the form is taken pretty seriously.

The 990 deadline varies based on an organization’s tax year because it’s due on the 15th day of the 5th month after it ends. For example, if your organization has a calendar tax year then your tax year ends in December and your Form 990 is due by May 15.

If your organization runs on a fiscal tax year, meaning it runs for 12 consecutive months and ends in any month except for December then your deadline varies based on the month it ends. For example, if your tax year ends in June then your Form 990 deadline is November 15.

Also, If you used file extension Form 8868 with ExpressExtension or another e-file extension provider in May for a 6-month extension on your Form 990 then your extension is up, and your Form 990 is due on November 15. For these reasons, November 15 is a major Form 990 deadline day.

It’s important that you file by your Form 990 deadline or you will have major penalties to deal with. For example, if your organization fails to file by the deadline and has less than $1,000,000 in gross receipts you will be charged $20 per every day your return is late.

This penalty will continue to build until it reaches $10K or 5% of your organization's total gross receipts, depending on which amount is smaller. If your organization has more than $1,000,000 in gross receipts then the penalty increases to $100 per day with a maximum penalty of $50,000.

Plus, along with facing these expenses, you will also be putting your tax-exempt status at risk. If any organization fails to file their Form 990 for 3 years in a row they will automatically lose their tax-exempt status!

However, there’s no need to worry. You can use ExpressTaxExempt or ExpressTaxFilings to quickly file your form 990. ExpressTaxExempt focuses on 990 forms while ExpressTaxFilings, soon to be TaxBandits, offers a variety of forms from the 940 series, ACA forms, tax extensions, and more.

With either site, you will create your free account and follow the step-by-step instructions to complete your form in a matter of minutes. You will finish your form and have it transmitted directly to the IRS before you know it!
