Span is Going Pink

Span Enterprises 10/16/2013
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  To show our support & raise awareness, the Span Enterprises Team was All Pink last week.  Our effort to "Go Pink" was led by UnitWise product manager, Elena.  With UnitWise we are always thinking Pink, but this month it is particularly important to do so.

We aren't alone in this effort.  Earlier this month, Charlotte held their annual Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure."  This year over 14,000 registered for the event to raise money and awareness for this worthy cause.

To learn more about other collaborating organizations for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month such as the American Cancer Society, CancerCare, National Cancer Institute, Susan G. Komen, and more you can go to www.NBCAM.org

Span Enterprises featured in this month's Old Town News

Span Enterprises 10/14/2013
The following article was originally published in the October 2013 edition of Rock Hill's Old Town News and can also be found on the Only In Old Town Blog

ROCK HILL  -  Span Enterprises is a company specializing in software development, mobile applications, and web programs. It was founded in 2009 by Agie Sundaram, CEO, and Naga Palanisamy, President. Together, they have more than 30 years of combined experience with software and marketing.

Span Enterprises adapts, builds, and creates products in-house to enhance and improve the way companies function. All products are customized to meet companies’ specific needs. With excellent customer service and a passion for web-based application development, Span Enterprises believes the possibilities are endless.

Span Enterprises’ new Old Town location is on the second floor of the historic Citizen Building at 157 E. Main Street. The space has been designed with an aviation theme because, according to its website, “Span Enterprises is a place where great ideas take flight.” The office has aviator chairs, several parts of an airplane, and even a ‘runway’ that spans the length of the building.

Span Enterprises Honored by Governor Nikki Haley

Span Enterprises 10/11/2013
Agie, our CEO, with South Carolina Governor: Nikki Haley
Yesterday at the Magnolia Room in Rock Hill, SC, Rep. Ralph Norman organized an event featuring South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.  Representative Norman has been a longtime friend of Span Enterprises & invited Agie, our CEO, to attend this event along with other business leaders, and politicians.

During his welcome speech and Introduction for Governor Haley, Rep. Norman recognized Agie for his exemplary leadership and presented him with a framed article from the Rock Hill Herald featuring Span Enterprises.  Rep. Norman also recognized Red Bowl Asian Bistro for their various restaurants' success in the area.  Upon acceptance of this acknowledgement, Agie was given a standing ovation from the entire audience in celebration of the tremendous success of Rock Hill's thriving small business community.

Gov. Nikki Haley also acknowledged Agie in her speech, stating the importance that small businesses play in our economy.  The Governor went on to speak about the new jobs that South Carolina has seen in the past few years including Boeing, Bridgestone, and Continental.

The Governor's accomplishments during this term have been particularly interesting to us at Span Enterprises for the following reasons:
-  South Carolina is becoming the largest Tire Manufacturer in the US, and we offer multiple IRS E-Filing Products for Vehicle & Fuel Use Taxes including ExpressTruckTax, ExpressIFTA, & More.
-  Over 18,000 South Carolinians have transitioned from welfare to work in the past few years, and thanks to our cooperation with various state agencies, many of our current employees are included in that figure.
-  Boeing has expanded its operations in South Carolina by $1 Billion, and we have the seats from a Boeing 737 in our Office!  See More Photos of our Office on Facebook!

Happy Birthday to our CEO

Span Enterprises 9/23/2013
Yesterday was the birthday of our Co-Founder & CEO, Agie. Seeing as we are a laid back company with a family atmosphere, we decided to have a little fun.

FRIDAY
In our brand new office, Agie has floor to ceiling glass walls for his office. Well, this fact was just too tempting for us. Agie is not a fan of sticky notes, so we made sure to rid his desk drawers of these pests.

After some lunch and cake, we dispersed for the weekend, leaving Agie to think the prank was done. However, we were simply setting him up to let his guard down; we had other plans.

MONDAY
As of this morning, we made sure Agie had enough balloons for his birthday. The fact that the sticky notes never got removed just made it that much better.

Agie appreciates a good prank (or two) and had a good laugh. And of course, all of this was removed and organization was restored by the end of the day, because clutter is not our style.

At Span Enterprises, we are always looking for talented individuals who can help us grow. If you are interested in a career at SPAN, please Apply Online.

In Rock Hill, Tech Firm Flies High

Span Enterprises 9/23/2013

This article was originally published in the Rock Hill Herald on September 23, 2013 by Senior Business Editor Don Worthington.  To view the original article, you can Click Here

— It’s a tossup over which is better: How Agie Sundaram, co-founder and CEO of Span Enterprises, decorated his downtown Rock Hill office or the story behind Sundaram and Span.

He has one of the coolest offices in Rock Hill.

Exterior aluminium panels from a Malaysia Airlines Airbus create a hallway of sorts on the second floor of the venerable Citizens building on Main Street.

Seats from a Boeing 737 form the employee lounge. Drinks are dispensed from galley containers from Japan Airlines. The parts came from an airplane boneyard in Tupelo, Miss., birthplace of Elvis.

The clocks for various time zones don’t have names on their faces, but instead have three-letter airport codes. One has RKH for Rock Hill/York County/Bryant Field airport.

The hallway is painted to resemble a runway with the numerals “16” closest to the front door. That means Sundaram’s “runway” points 160 degrees, running just east of south. He notes it is the same orientation as Runway 16R at Denver International, the longest public-use runway in the United States.

Sundaram selected the airplane motif for several reasons. He loves to fly, even proposing to his future wife Carrie while flying a Cessna 172.

“I didn’t have to get down on my knees,” he said.

The motif is also a metaphor for Sundaram’s business. He wants Span Enterprises to be a place where ideas come to soar. There are no limits. Even the company’s logo has two infinity symbols.

Before Sundaram formed Span he was a photographer on cruise ships. He started in the days when you snapped the passengers’ “memorable” moments all day and then spent all night developing the film, printing the negatives and trimming the prints with a cutter controlled by a foot trundle. The photos had to be ready for sale the next morning.

As much as he liked photography, he realized it was a business that would not fund the retirement he wanted.

He and friend Naga Palanisamy formed Span Enterprises. They got the company name from the initials of their last names and the initials from their first names.

It took more than some fancy linguistic combination to get Span off the ground.

Banks wouldn’t lend them money, so they maxed out credits and sold everything they had. Sundaram sold more than $30,000 in photography gear, even the gold his parents had given him. He kept an empty camera bag to remind him of previous times.  Palanisamy sold his home television while his children were watching it.

Through the assistance of the Warren Norman Co. they opened in a small office off India Hook Road. The office was so small that if more than two people were there, it was easier to meet outside. Sundaram’s first “desk” was a card table.

What they lacked in physical space, they more than made up for in ideas. Sundaram had sales experience. Palanisamy was an experienced programmer. They turned to what they knew to develop new software.

Palanisamy, from previous work, was familiar with the needs of long-distance truckers. They have to fill out lots of paperwork, including IRS forms. Span Enterprises developed a program that allows truckers to file the forms electronically with the IRS. Span also has a tech support staff that helps truckers understand the often-confusing IRS regulations.

Sundaram had a good feel for how software could help photographers and event planners. His wife sold Mary Kay products. Span Enterprises developed programs to help all three kinds of small businesses.

The result is Span Enterprises now has eight products in the market, four in development and is evaluating 10 ideas. While the cloud-based programs streamline operations, what they really are doing is creating more time for their clients to enjoy as they wish, Sundaram said.

Span Enterprises is an international company with three offices, the Rock Hill office with about 12 employees and two offices in India that employ 70 software developers and other technicians. Sundaram hopes to hire more people at both locations as his business grows.

He wants people with ideas to seek him out. His location in the same building as the Knowledge Park Technology Incubator and the Hive may help in that quest. Span Enterprises is certainly the kind of business the city says it wants to attract as part of its Knowledge Park economic development initiative.

Sundaram’s biggest challenge is finding the right people for the Rock Hill office. They need to be tech savvy, willing to work and above all, be happy. If they are not happy working at Span, they won’t be effective in helping clients, Sundaram said.

“The question is,” he said. “Can you handle the awesomeness. The awesomeness of the product and the awesomeness of the sales and support team?”

SPANalot

Span Enterprises 9/13/2013
On September 12th, the Span Enterprises team officially celebrated our move into Old Town Rock Hill with an Inaguration and Ribbon Cutting Party, playfully referred to as SPANALOT.

The Span Enterprises Team & family were joined by Representative Ralph Norman, Rock Hill Mayor Doug Echols, and numerous media representatives.

For those unfamiliar with Span Enterprises, Glenn Durand, Span's VP of Operations provided a brief history & explanation of the many Span Enterprises Products.

Shortly thereafter, Agie Sundaram, Span's Co-Founder & CEO provided several heartfelt & inspiring remarks. Among others, Agie recognized some early supporters of Span Enterprises such as Kyle Curtis of Park Sterling Bank, and Ralph Norman of Warren Norman, Inc.  Since Span was founded during one of America's worst recessions, it was very fortuitous for the company to have done business with such forward thinking bankers and developers like Mr. Curtis & Representative Norman.

The Ribbon Cutting team included Representative Ralph Norman, Mayor Doug Echols, and Span's Co-Founders: Agie Sundaram & Naga Palanisamy.

The party continued next door at the Old Town Market Hall on Caldwell Street, where guests enjoyed a wide variety of cuisines.  Local restauranteur, Brendan Kuhlkin provided a custom burger bar consisting of bison, lamb, and salmon burgers.  A local sushi chef was also on location preparing fresh sushi rolls for the crowd.  A celebration at Span would not be complete without some Indian food, and it did not disappoint; Charlotte's Cafe Nirvana provided a terrific spread of Indian dishes from Chicken Biryani to Fruit Custard.

The new Span Enterprises office in the historic Citizens Building on East Main Street is considerably larger than it's previous office in Shiland Villages, but there is still room to grow. At Span Enterprises, we are always looking for talented individuals who can help us grow. If you are interested in a career at SPAN, please Apply Online.

We Have a Runway

Span Enterprises 8/23/2013

Since our team at Span Enterprises has launched so many great products over the past few years, we decided that our new office might as well have a runway.   So we built one.

As you can see in this photo, we have stained the concrete in our new office leaving a "runway" that spans the length of the building.   Our new space is designed with an aviation theme, which is fitting because Span Enterprises is a place where great ideas take flight.

Our 2nd Floor office of the Citizens Building in Old Town Rock Hill, SC is coming along great!  Our floors are finished, our walls are in place, and now we just need to add furniture.

If you would like to see your ideas take flight, you can apply to Join Our Team! We are always looking for talented individuals who can help us grow. If you are interested in a career at SPAN, please Apply Online.

Carrom Friday

Span Enterprises 8/15/2013
Last month we blogged about Tea Time - one of our daily Span Enterprises office traditions.  Another popular tradition at Span is Carrom Friday.  We don't do Casual Friday (Because everyday is pretty much casual for us) but we do like to play Carrom!  Each Friday, we setup the Carrom Board after Tea Time and a fierce competition ensues.

Carrom is a table game with Eastern origins and is not easy to describe.  A simple description would be to say that it is like a combination of billiards and table shuffleboard.  Each game consists of 20 Carrom pieces on a board, and each player attempts to sink their pieces into the corner pockets using a "Striker" that is flicked with one's finger.   There are many more rules to the game, but Ain't Nobody Got Time For That.

In a typical Carrom tournament in the office, emotions range from lighthearted and fun to intensely competitive, but the one commonality that unites us all is that none of us are very talented Carrom players although we have been playing it for years. If you would like to join our Carrom Tournaments each week, you can apply to Join Our Team! We are always looking for talented individuals who can help us grow. If you are interested in a career at SPAN, please Apply Online.

A Colorful Space

Span Enterprises 8/01/2013

The 2nd Floor of the Citizen's Building in Old Town Rock Hill is looking much more alive thanks to the coats of paint that we are adding to our space.  The floors are nearly finished, and we will soon be able to start setting up our offices & workstations.

Our walls might be orange, but it's not because we are necessarily Clemson fans.  Our office colors are Blue & Orange, based on the colors of our logo.

It's Tea Time at the Office

Span Enterprises 7/26/2013
Although Span Enterprises is a somewhat non-traditional office, we have developed several office traditions over the past few years.  One of our older traditions at the office is Tea Time.  Everyday at 4:00 we ring a bell and everyone who is available gathers around our increasingly crowded table to enjoy some snacks, coffee, or tea.

Our Tea Time refreshments are different each day.  Sometimes it's fresh fruit, some days it's cupcakes, and sometimes we simply enjoy coffee, tea, & conversation.

Since we have outgrown our current space, we are making big plans for our new office in Old Town Rock Hill, SC to include a lounge & kitchen area large enough to accommodate our daily Tea Time.

If you would like to enjoy our Tea Time festivities on a daily basis, you can Join Our Team! We are always looking for talented individuals who can help us grow.  If you are interested in a career at SPAN, please Apply Online.

Floor It

Span Enterprises 7/19/2013
Close- Up of the Floor in the Historic Citizen's Building - Old Town Rock Hill, SC

We are getting very close to our big move to Old Town Rock Hill. Our team has been very busy making preparations for the new office, and we are currently making our first big enhancement - Staining the Floors.

As you can see from this image, the 2nd Floor of the Citizen's Building has definitely seen some wear and tear over the past century.  Part of our plans for reviving this historic space include staining these concrete floors to provide a uniform look and feel for the new space.  These new changes to the floor will help preserve the floor, while also improving the air quality and energy efficiency of the office.

After the floor is complete, we will start adding our glass walls, desks, workstations, and some one-of-a-kind office furniture (Pictures Coming Soon).

Planning the New Office

Span Enterprises 6/13/2013
In anticipation of our upcoming move to the Citizen Building in Old Town Rock Hill, SC we have been busy making preparations in order to get our new space ready to move-in.  Our Team has begun meeting with carpenters, designers, and more in order to finalize the floors, ceilings, walls, and furniture.

This week, we finalized our decisions for our office walls.  Although, a majority of the office will have an open layout, there will be a few offices and a conference room built with glass panels.  Currently, the office is completely open, and provides great panoramic views of Main Street & the surrounding downtown area of Rock Hill.  Using glass walls for the offices will preserve the great views from our space, while also complementing our business philosophy of openness & transparency.  (See the image below for an example for our Glass Walls)

Something New in Old Town

Span Enterprises 5/16/2013
The Historic Citizen's Building from Main Street
It's official, Span Enterprises is moving to Old Town (downtown) Rock Hill.  After working closely with Bryan Barwick of Barwick & Associates, LLC we have made the decision to move to the Citizen's Building in Old Town Rock Hill, SC.  Our growing team will be occupying the entire 2nd floor and the mezzanine level of the Historic Citizen's Bank Building on Main Street.

After months of searching, Span Enterprises Co-founder & CEO: Agie Sundaram met with Bryan Barwick and made the deal for Span Enterprises to move in within the next few months.  The entire 2nd Floor will serve as our Marketing, Sales, & Customer Support Center for all of our products; while the mezzanine level will be used as "Span Studios" for the recording & production of our products' help videos.

This will be the 2nd move for Span Enterprises.  We outgrew our first office in Shiland Villages in 2010.  By early 2011 we moved to our current location on the 1st floor of Shiland Villages.  After continuously outgrowing our office spaces, we are greatly looking forward to having an entire floor to ourselves.

Built in 1925, The Citizen Building is a Historic Rock Hill landmark and we are thrilled to bring our software development company to such a unique and well maintained space.  We are planning the overall design of our new office now & will be posting our progress.

We are proud to be a part of Rock Hill's downtown revitalization.  As a tech company, we are glad to be located in the same building as several other forward thinking organizations such as The Hive - a workforce / small business development program, and the upcoming Clemson University technology incubator.

Our team is also excited to be so close to so many great restaurants.  Being on the same block as Jimmy Johns, McHale'sMillstone, & Erin's Restaurant is definitely an exciting change.  With such great dining options within steps of our building, our team may end up spending their days & nights in "Old Town" Rock Hill.
